About Us

Tundra Rose Construction is a 100% Alaskan and woman-owned business with almost 30 years experience in the construction industry. The owner, Ms. Sheirwin Caldwell, came to Alaska from her homes in Ohio & Kentucky at age seventeen. She made her way to Kodiak where she lived on a small salmon boat. She worked as a cook & deck hand on the Bering Sea, mended crab pots and nets, and also worked in a cannery. By her early twenties she began looking toward a career in construction. Her father is a general contractor in Ohio and she received guidance from him (and still does). Ms. Caldwell was among the first women to join the Carpenters Union in Alaska, and she worked construction until the building slow down in the 1980's. She was accepted into and attended the College of Science and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico and also Butte, Montana, where she studied geology. Ms. Caldwell quickly returned to Alaska to work on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill clean-up efforts, and continued her education at the University of Alaska. She began building a dream of owning her own construction company.

Though she worked for other contractors, she worked very hard to start her own company, and in 1997 Tundra Rose Construction was born! Ms. Caldwell has become a well-respected general contractor and land developer. She has been on the board of directors for the National Association of homes builders (NAHB), local chapter, 2001-2004. In 2002, Ms. Caldwell became the first woman builder to receive a NAHB award in the Mat-Su Valley. She is serious about her efforts in the community and strongly believes that working together locally can and does make a difference. Ms. Caldwell led the first all-woman built Habitat for Humanity home in Alaska. She has also taught many women in the building trades and construction, as a consultant through the University of Alaska. When asked what it feels like to build a home Ms. Caldwell replied: "Building a home is a wonderful feeling. We build a home that will outlast all of us." When asked what keeps her going, she readily replied: "I look at every day as a school day, and challenging situations are just opportunities in disguise!" Ms. Caldwell is very passionate about "Building Alaskan Dreams" and it shows in every Tundra Rose project.
